Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Nawfal bin al-Harith sent his two sons to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said to them: Go to your uncle; perhaps he will employ you (in collecting) the sadaqat so that you may get something and be able to marry. So they met Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and he asked: Where are you going? They told him their need, and he said: Go back. So they went back. When evening came, he told them to go to the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When they reached the door, they asked permission, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): "Lower your curtain; I am calling my two cousins in." Then they told the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) of their need, and the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "Nothing of the sadaqat is lawful for you, the people of the household (Ahl al-Bayt), nor the water of washing hands; but in the fifth of the khumus there is for you what will make you independent or suffice you."
