Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 11402 — I was with Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas

Ata' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was with Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) when a man came to him and said: O Abu Abbas! What do you say about me? He said: What could I say about you? He said: I am one who works with the pen (a government scribe). He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "On the Day of Resurrection the man of the pen will be brought in a coffin of fire, locked with locks of fire. He will look at his pen to see in what he used it: if he used it in obedience to Allah and His pleasure, the coffin will be opened from him; and if he used it in disobedience to Allah, the coffin will plunge with him for seventy years, even the one who sharpens the pen and the one who mixes the ink in the inkpot (falls under the same ruling)."
