Ibn Jurayj (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Ata' (may Allah have mercy on him) told me that he heard Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) say: If you are able that no one goes out on the day of Eid al-Fitr without eating something, let him do so. Ata' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Ever since I heard this from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), I do not go out before eating something; so I eat a piece from the edge of a tarifah. The narrator said: I asked: What is a tarifah? He said: Thin bread; or I drink milk, or nabidh, or water. I said: How do you explain this? He said: I heard - I think from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) - that he said: "They would not go out until the forenoon had advanced, and they would say: We eat something so that we are not hurried in the prayer." He said: "And sometimes I myself would go out in the morning having tasted nothing but water." (This last sentence) is the saying of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) himself.
