Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 10932 — Safwan bin Umayyah came to Madinah

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Madinah and slept in the mosque, placing his cloak under his head. Then a thief came and stole it, and he was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that his hand be cut off. At this, Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, I have let him have it (and forgiven him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not say this before bringing him to me?"
