Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 10784 — I heard Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased)

Yazid bin Hurmuz narrates: I heard Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) when a letter from Najdah had come to him. He had written to him asking about the near relatives (dhawi al-qurba) mentioned in the Qur'an; about killing the children of the polytheists, and whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to kill them; about when the orphanhood of an orphan ends; and about a slave and a woman who take part in battle. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Were it not that I want to keep him from an evil I fear he will fall into, I would not write to him. Then he wrote concerning the near relatives: We used to hold that the near relatives of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) are us, but our people refused us that. As for the orphan, when he reaches the age of marriage and sound judgement is perceived in him, his wealth is handed over to him, and his orphanhood has ended. As for the children, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not kill the children of the polytheists, so do not kill them either, unless you know what al-Khidr (peace be upon him) knew about the boy when he killed him. And as for whether the slave and the woman have a share when they take part in battle, he wrote to him that there is no fixed share for them, except that they are given something from the spoils of the people.
