It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Musaylimah the Liar came (to Madinah) in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and began saying: If Muhammad ((peace and blessings be upon him)) assigns this matter (authority) to me after him, I will follow him. He had come with many people of his tribe. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to him, accompanied by Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him), and in the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was a piece of a palm stalk. He ((peace and blessings be upon him)) stopped by Musaylimah, who was among his companions, and said: "If you were to ask me even for this piece, I would not give it to you. You will not go beyond Allah's decree concerning you, and if you turn your back, Allah will destroy you. I see you as the one I was shown concerning you, and this is Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas, who will answer you on my behalf." Then he ((peace and blessings be upon him)) went back.
