Mishkat al-Masabih 3604 — Explanation of branding the thief’s hand
وَرُوِيَ فِي شَرْحِ السُّنَّةِ فِي قَطْعِ السَّارِقِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «اقْطَعُوهُ ثمَّ احسموه»
In Sharh as-sunna the Prophet is reported as saying regarding the maiming of a thief, "Maim him, then cauterise him."
