قَالَ الْحَارِثُ : حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ ، ثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ قَالَ : اجْتَمَعَ رَهْطٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَمِنْهُمُ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ ، وَحُذَيْفَةُ ، وَسَعْدٌ ، وَابْنُ عُمَرَ ، وَعَمَّارٌ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمْ فَذَكَرَ حُذَيْفَةُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فِتْنَةً ، فَقَالَ : أَمَّا أَنَا فَإِنْ أَدْرَكْتُهَا عَلِمْتُ الْمَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا ، وَقَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : وَأَنَا إِنْ أَدْرَكْتُهَا عَلِمْتُ الْمَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا ، فَقَالَ سَعْدٌ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : أَمَّا أَنَا إِنْ أَدْرَكْتُهَا فَوَجَدْتُ سَيْفًا ، يَقُولُ : هَذَا مُؤْمِنٌ فَدَعْهُ ، وَهَذَا كَافِرٌ فَاقْتُلْهُ ، قَاتَلْتُ وَإِلَّا لَمْ أُقَاتِلْ ، قَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا : وَأَنَا مَعَكَ ، فَقَالَ عَمَّارٌ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : أَمَّا أَنَا فَإِنْ أَدْرَكْتُهَا أَخَذْتُ سَيْفِي فَوَضَعْتُهُ عَلَى عَاتِقِي ، ثُمَّ قَصَدْتُ نَحْوَ جُمْهُورِهَا الْأَعْظَمِ فَضَرَبْتُ حَتَّى يَتَفَرَّقَ .

It is narrated from Hisham bin Hassan that a group of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered, among them Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud, Sayyiduna Hudhayfah, Sayyiduna Sa'd, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar and Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with them). Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) brought up the mention of a certain trial (fitnah) and said: "As for me, if I live to see this trial, I know well the way to escape from it." Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) also said (in agreement with him): "And I too, if I meet this trial, am well acquainted with the way of deliverance from it." Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "But as for me, if I live to see the time of this trial and I find a sword that (as it were, calls out and) says: 'This one is a believer, leave him, and this one is a disbeliever, kill him,' then I will fight; otherwise I will never fight." Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "I too am with you (in this position)." At this Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said (displaying his zeal): "As for me, if I face this trial, I will take my sword, place it on my shoulder, then head for the largest group of the troublemakers and strike at them until they scatter."

وَقَالَ إِسْحَاقُ : أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ ، ثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْمُرَادِيِّ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَلِمَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : كَانَ شَاعِرٌ لَيْلَةَ صِفِّينَ ، يُنْشِدُ هِجَاءَ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَعَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ ، وَعَمَّارُ بْنُ يَاسِرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ : الْزَقْ بِالْفَجُورَيْنِ ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ : هَذَا وَأَنْتُمْ أَصْحَابُ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ فَقَالَ عَمَّارٌ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : إِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ تَجْلِسَ فَاجْلِسْ ، وَإِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ تَذْهَبَ فَاذْهَبْ .
It is narrated from Abdullah bin Salimah (may Allah have mercy on him) that on one night of Siffin a poet was reciting verses satirising and condemning Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah and Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both), and Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) was saying (encouraging him): "Keep at the condemnation of these two sinners." At this a man said (in astonishment and surprise): "Are you doing all this, while you are the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said (bluntly): "If you wish to sit, then sit; and if you wish to leave, you may go."
The chain of this report (athar) contains Sharik bin Abdullah al-Qadi, who is not free of criticism among the hadith scholars on account of his memory; and Imam Ishaq bin Rahwayh recorded it.
