قَالَ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ قُرَّةَ الْمُزَنِيِّ ، قَالَ : أَتَيْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ فِي زَمَنِ الْأَقِطِ وَالسَّمْنِ ، وَالْأَعْرَابُ يَأْتُونَ بِالزِّقَاقِ يَسْتَقُونَ بِهَا ، فَإِذَا أَنَا بِرَجُلٍ طَامِحِ الْبَصَرِ وَهُوَ يَنْظُرُ إِلَى النَّاسِ ، فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ غَرِيبٌ ، فَدَنَوْتُ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَرَدَّ عَلَيَّ السَّلَامَ ، وَقَالَ لِي : مِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ أَنْتَ ؟ قُلْتُ : نَعَمْ ، فَجَلَسْتُ مَعَهُ فَقُلْتُ : مِمَّنْ أَنْتَ ؟ قَالَ : مِنْ بَنِي هِلَالٍ ، وَاسْمِي كَهْمَسٌ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي : أَلَا أُحَدِّثُكَ حَدِيثًا شَهِدْتُهُ مِنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ؟ فَقُلْتُ : بَلَى ، قَالَ : بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ جُلُوسٌ عِنْدَهُ - فَذَكَرَ الْقِصَّةَ ، فَقَالَ : ثُمَّ قَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : خَيْرُ أُمَّتِي الْقَرْنُ الَّذِي أَنَا مِنْهُ ، ثُمَّ الثَّانِي ، ثُمَّ الثَّالِثُ ، ثُمَّ يَنْشَأُ قَوْمٌ تَسْبِقُ أَيْمَانُهُمْ شَهَادَتَهُمْ ، يَشْهَدُونَ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يُسْتَشْهَدُوا ، لَهُمْ لَغَطٌ فِي أَسْوَاقِهِمْ .
قَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ : قَالَ كَهْمَسٌ : أَتَخَافُ أَنْ يَكُونَ هَؤُلَاءِ مِنْ أُولَئِكَ ... فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ .
وَقَدْ سَبَقَ طَرَفٌ مِنْهُ فِي الصَّوْمِ ، وَطَرَفٌ فِي النِّكَاحِ .
وَإِسْنَادُهُ قَوِيٌّ .
4174 \ 2 - وَرَوَى ابْنُ أَبِي عَاصِمٍ ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي دَاوُدَ بِهِ .
4174 \ 3 - وَرَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي تَارِيخِهِ وَسَمَّوَيْهِ فِي فَوَائِدِهِ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ مِثْلَهُ .
4174 \ 4 - وَأَخْرَجَهُ الْحَاكِمُ فِي الْكُنَى مِنْ طَرِيقِ مُوسَى بِهِ .
قَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ : قَالَ كَهْمَسٌ : أَتَخَافُ أَنْ يَكُونَ هَؤُلَاءِ مِنْ أُولَئِكَ ... فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ .
وَقَدْ سَبَقَ طَرَفٌ مِنْهُ فِي الصَّوْمِ ، وَطَرَفٌ فِي النِّكَاحِ .
وَإِسْنَادُهُ قَوِيٌّ .
4174 \ 2 - وَرَوَى ابْنُ أَبِي عَاصِمٍ ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي دَاوُدَ بِهِ .
4174 \ 3 - وَرَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي تَارِيخِهِ وَسَمَّوَيْهِ فِي فَوَائِدِهِ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ مِثْلَهُ .
4174 \ 4 - وَأَخْرَجَهُ الْحَاكِمُ فِي الْكُنَى مِنْ طَرِيقِ مُوسَى بِهِ .
Mu'awiyah bin Qurrah al-Muzani (may Allah have mercy on him) relates: I came to Madinah in the season of dried cheese and ghee (when they were plentiful), and at that time the desert Bedouins used to come with leather bags which they filled with these things. There my eyes fell upon a man who was looking at the people with a deep and eager gaze. I thought he might be a traveller, so I went near him and greeted him. He returned my greeting and asked me: "Are you from the people of Madinah?" I replied: "Yes." Then I sat with him and asked him: "Where are you from?" He said: "I am from Banu Hilal and my name is Kahmas." Then he said to me: "Shall I not tell you of an incident that I myself witnessed in the gathering of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him)?" I said: "Certainly (please tell me)." He said: "Once, while we were sitting with him" — then he narrated the full story — in which Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The best of my Ummah are those of the generation (era) in which I was sent, then those who come after them, then those who come after them. Then people will arise whose oaths will precede their testimony; they will give testimony before being asked to testify, and there will be much noise, clamour and uproar from them in their markets."
Mu'awiyah said that Kahmas said: "Do you fear that these people might also be among those?" Then he mentioned the whole hadith.
A part of this hadith has already passed in the Book of Fasting and a part in the Book of Marriage.
Its chain is qawi (strong).
Ibn Abi Asim, Imam Bukhari, Samawayh and Imam al-Hakim also narrated it through various routes.

وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ رُشَيْدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عِرْقٍ الْحِمْصِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بُسْرٍ صَاحِبِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : سَدِّدُوا وَأَبْشِرُوا ، فَإِنَّ اللهَ تَعَالَى لَيْسَ إِلَى عَذَابِكُمْ بِسَرِيعٍ ، وَسَيَأْتِي قَوْمٌ لَا حُجَّةَ لَهُمْ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Busr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Adopt the path of correctness and moderation, and rejoice, for Allah Almighty is not quick to punish you; and soon people will come who will have no proof."

وَبِهِ : طُوبَى لِمَنْ رَآنِي وَآمَنَ بِي ، وَطُوبَى لِمَنْ آمَنَ بِي وَلَمْ يَرَنِي ، طُوبَى لَهُمْ وَحُسْنُ مَآبٍ .
With the same chain, it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Busr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Glad tidings for the one who saw me and believed in me, and glad tidings for the one who believed in me though he did not see me; for them is well-being and an excellent place of return."
وَقَالَ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ : حَدَّثَنَا طَلْحَةُ هُوَ ابْنُ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ : يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، أَنْتُمْ نَظَرْتُمْ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِأَعْيُنِكُمْ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : وَكَلَّمْتُمُوهُ بِأَلْسِنَتِكُمْ هَذِهِ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : وَبَايَعْتُمُوهُ بِأَيْمَانِكُمْ هَذِهِ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : طُوبَى لَكُمْ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، قَالَ : أَفَلَا أُخْبِرُكَ عَنْ شَيْءٍ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْهُ ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : طُوبَى لِمَنْ رَآنِي وَآمَنَ بِي ، وَطُوبَى لِمَنْ آمَنَ بِي وَلَمْ يَرَنِي - ثَلَاثًا .
4177 \ 2 - وَقَالَ عَبْدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا طَلْحَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو بِهِ .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to him and said: "O Abu Abdul Rahman, did you people see the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with your own eyes?" He replied: "Yes." He asked: "Did you also speak with him (peace and blessings be upon him) with your tongues?" He said: "Yes." He asked: "Did you also give him (peace and blessings be upon him) the pledge of allegiance with your hands?" He said: "Yes." The man said: "O Abu Abdul Rahman, glad tidings for you people." Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Shall I not tell you something that I myself heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Glad tidings for the one who saw me and believed in me, and glad tidings for the one who believed in me though he did not see me." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said these words three times.

وَقَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْمُقْرِئُ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، قَالَ : إِنَّ أَبَا الْخَيْرِ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ جُهَيْنَةَ أَخْبَرَهُ : أَنَّ رَجُلَيْنِ أَتَيَا رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِمَا ، فَقَالَ : مَذْحِجِيَّانِ أَوْ كِنْدِيَّانِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : بَلْ كِنْدِيَّانِ ، فَأَتَيَاهُ فَإِذَا هُمَا كِنْدِيَّانِ ، قَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا : أَرَأَيْتَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَنِ اتَّبَعَ مَا أُرْسِلْتَ بِهِ ، وَصَدَّقَكَ وَلَمْ يَرَكَ ؟ قَالَ : طُوبَى لَهُ ، ثُمَّ طُوبَى لَهُ .
4178 \ 2 - وَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ مَرْثَدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْجُهَنِيِّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : بَيْنَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذْ طَلَعَ رَاكِبَانِ ، فَلَمَّا رَآهُمَا قَالَ : كِنْدِيَّانِ مَذْحِجِيَّانِ ، حَتَّى أَتَيَا فَإِذَا رَجُلَانِ مِنْ مَذْحِجٍ ، قَالَ : فَدَنَا أَحَدُهُمَا إِلَيْهِ لِيُبَايِعَهُ ، فَلَمَّا أَخَذَ بِيَدِهِ قَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، أَرَأَيْتَ مَنْ آمَنَ بِكَ وَصَدَّقَكَ وَاتَّبَعَكَ ، فَمَاذَا لَهُ ؟ قَالَ : طُوبَى لَهُ ، فَمَسَحَ عَلَى يَدِهِ فَانْصَرَفَ ، ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ الْآخَرُ حَتَّى أَخَذَ بِيَدِهِ لِيُبَايِعَهُ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، أَرَأَيْتَ مَنْ آمَنَ بِكَ وَصَدَّقَكَ وَاتَّبَعَكَ وَلَمْ يَرَكَ ؟ قَالَ : طُوبَى لَهُ ، ثُمَّ مَسَحَ عَلَى يَدِهِ وَانْصَرَفَ .
4178 \ 2 - وَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ مَرْثَدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْجُهَنِيِّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : بَيْنَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذْ طَلَعَ رَاكِبَانِ ، فَلَمَّا رَآهُمَا قَالَ : كِنْدِيَّانِ مَذْحِجِيَّانِ ، حَتَّى أَتَيَا فَإِذَا رَجُلَانِ مِنْ مَذْحِجٍ ، قَالَ : فَدَنَا أَحَدُهُمَا إِلَيْهِ لِيُبَايِعَهُ ، فَلَمَّا أَخَذَ بِيَدِهِ قَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، أَرَأَيْتَ مَنْ آمَنَ بِكَ وَصَدَّقَكَ وَاتَّبَعَكَ ، فَمَاذَا لَهُ ؟ قَالَ : طُوبَى لَهُ ، فَمَسَحَ عَلَى يَدِهِ فَانْصَرَفَ ، ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ الْآخَرُ حَتَّى أَخَذَ بِيَدِهِ لِيُبَايِعَهُ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، أَرَأَيْتَ مَنْ آمَنَ بِكَ وَصَدَّقَكَ وَاتَّبَعَكَ وَلَمْ يَرَكَ ؟ قَالَ : طُوبَى لَهُ ، ثُمَّ مَسَحَ عَلَى يَدِهِ وَانْصَرَفَ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Abdul Rahman al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) that two men came into the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at them and said: "Are they from the tribe of Madhhij or from the tribe of Kindah?" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, they are Kindis (of the tribe of Kindah)." So the two of them came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and they were indeed Kindis. One of them said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about a person who followed the law you brought and affirmed you, though he did not see you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tuba lahu (lofty ranks and glad tidings are for him)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said again: "Tuba lahu (lofty ranks and glad tidings are for him)."
Sayyiduna Abu Abdul Rahman al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: We were present in the blessed company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when suddenly two riders appeared. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw them, he said: "These are Kindis and Madhhijis." When they arrived, it turned out that both were men of the tribe of Madhhij. One of them came near him (peace and blessings be upon him) to give the pledge of allegiance, and when he took his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed hand he said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about a person who believed in you, affirmed you and followed you completely, what reward and rank is there for him? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tuba lahu (glad tidings and a station in Paradise are for him)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his hand kindly over the man's hand and the man departed. Then the second man came forward and, taking his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed hand to give the pledge of allegiance, said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about a person who believed in you, affirmed you and followed you, but did not see you (with his physical eyes)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tuba lahu (glad tidings and lofty ranks are for him)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his blessed hand over his hand, and he too went back.
