قَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ ، ثَنَا الْفُضَيْلُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ ، عَنْ عَوْنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ - ، قَالَ : لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ : أَلَمْ يَأْنِ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْ تَخْشَعَ قُلُوبُهُمْ لِذِكْرِ اللهِ - أَقْبَلَ بَعْضُنَا عَلَى بَعْضٍ : أَيُّ شَيْءٍ أَحْدَثْنَا ؟ أَيُّ شَيْءٍ صَنَعْنَا ؟ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this noble statement of Allah Almighty was revealed: "Has the time not yet come for those who believe that their hearts should melt for the remembrance of Allah and be filled with humility and submission?" [Surah al-Hadid: 16], we turned to one another and began asking (anxiously): "What new thing have we done? What deed has come from us (on account of which this warning was revealed)?"
Imam Abu Ya'la related it in his Musnad, and the narrators of its chain are thiqat (trustworthy); Imam Muslim also related this meaning from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in his Sahih.

وَقَالَ إِسْحَاقُ : أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ لَيْثِ ابْنِ أَبِي سُلَيْمٍ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عَلِيٌّ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ - : إِنَّ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ الْآيَةَ ، مَا عَمِلَ بِهَا أَحَدٌ قَبْلِي ، وَلَا عَمِلَ بِهَا أَحَدٌ بَعْدِي ، آيَةُ النَّجْوَى : يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا نَاجَيْتُمُ الرَّسُولَ فَقَدِّمُوا بَيْنَ يَدَيْ نَجْوَاكُمْ صَدَقَةً - إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ ، قَالَ : كَانَ عِنْدِي دِينَارٌ بِعْتُهُ بِعَشَرَةِ دَرَاهِمَ ، فَنَاجَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَكُنْتُ كُلَّمَا نَاجَيْتُهُ قَدَّمْتُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ نَجْوَايَ دِرْهَمًا ، ثُمَّ نُسِخَتْ ، فَلَمْ يَعْمَلْ بِهَا أَحَدٌ ، فَنَزَلَتْ : أَأَشْفَقْتُمْ أَنْ تُقَدِّمُوا بَيْنَ يَدَيْ نَجْوَاكُمْ صَدَقَاتٍ إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ .
3747 \ 2 - رَوَاهُ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ إِدْرِيسَ ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ بِهِ .
قُلْتُ : رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ مِنْ طَرِيقِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ بِغَيْرِ هَذَا السِّيَاقِ .
3747 \ 2 - رَوَاهُ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ إِدْرِيسَ ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ بِهِ .
قُلْتُ : رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ مِنْ طَرِيقِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ بِغَيْرِ هَذَا السِّيَاقِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Indeed, in the Book of Allah Almighty there is a verse which no one acted upon before me and no one will act upon after me, and it is this verse concerning private consultation: 'O you who believe! When you wish to speak privately with the Messenger, offer some charity before your private consultation' [Surah al-Mujadilah: 12]." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "I had a dinar which I sold for ten dirhams; then whenever I wished to speak privately with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I would give a dirham in charity before my conversation. Then this command was abrogated, and no one other than me acted upon it. Then this verse was revealed: 'Are you afraid of offering charities before your private consultation?' [Surah al-Mujadilah: 13]."
Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah related it from Abdullah bin Idris, from Layth, with the same chain. I (Ibn Hajar) say: Imam al-Tirmidhi related it by way of Ali bin Alqamah from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) with a context different from this wording.
