قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لِيَسْتَرْجِعْ أَحَدُكُمْ عَنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَتَّى فِي شِسْعِ نَعْلِهِ ، فَإِنَّهُ مِنَ الْمَصَائِبِ " .
3357 \ 2 - وَحَدَّثَنَا حَفْصٌ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ ، فَذَكَرَهُ بِلَفْظِ : " إِذَا انْقَطَعَ شِسْعُ أَحَدِكُمْ فَلْيَسْتَرْجِعْ فَإِنَّهَا مِنَ الْمَصَائِبِ ، وَسَلُوا اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ، حَتَّى الشِّسْعَ ، فَإِنَّهُ إِنْ لَمْ يُيَسِّرْهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ " .
3357 \ 3 - حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ ، بِهَذَا .
3357 \ 2 - وَحَدَّثَنَا حَفْصٌ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ ، فَذَكَرَهُ بِلَفْظِ : " إِذَا انْقَطَعَ شِسْعُ أَحَدِكُمْ فَلْيَسْتَرْجِعْ فَإِنَّهَا مِنَ الْمَصَائِبِ ، وَسَلُوا اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ، حَتَّى الشِّسْعَ ، فَإِنَّهُ إِنْ لَمْ يُيَسِّرْهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ " .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Each of you should say the words of istirja', that is, 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un' (Indeed, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return), over every (distressing) thing, even when the strap of his sandal breaks, for that too is among calamities and troubles."
In another chain these words are narrated, that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the strap of the sandal of any of you breaks, let him say the words of istirja', for that too is among calamities; and ask Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, alone, even for a sandal strap, for the reality is that if He (Allah Almighty) does not make it easy and available, it cannot be obtained."
Imam Khalid also narrated the like of it through Yahya bin Ubaydullah.

وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْمُنَادِي ، ثِقَةٌ ، ثَنَا هَاشِمُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ ، ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْوَضَّاحِ ، عَنْ هِشَامٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ : " سَلُوا اللهَ ، عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ، كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَتَّى الشِّسْعَ ، فَإِنَّ اللهَ تَعَالَى إِنْ لَمْ يُيَسِّرْهُ لَمْ يَتَيَسَّرْ " .
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: "Ask Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, for everything, small or great, even for (your) sandal strap; for the reality is that if Allah Almighty does not make even that easy and simple, it can never become available or possible."
Imam Abu Ya'la narrated this hadith in his Musnad, and all of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). This narration indicates that a person, in every one of his needs, is wholly dependent on the will of Allah Almighty and on His enabling grace.
