قَالَ أَحْمَدُ فِي الزُّهْدِ : حَدَّثَنَا سُرَيْجٌ ، وَعَفَّانُ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا مَهْدِيٌّ ، عَنْ غَيْلَانَ ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ : " احْتَرِسُوا مِنَ النَّاسِ بِسُوءِ الظَّنِّ " .
قُلْتُ : رُوِيَ هَذَا مَرْفُوعًا .

It is narrated from Mutarrif bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) that he used to say: "Make suspicion (that is, being extremely alert and taking precautions) your shield for protection from (the possible evil and cunning of) people."
I (Ibn Hajar) say: This saying has also been narrated as marfu' (attributed) to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

قَالَ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ : حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ ، يَعْنِي : ابْنَ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مُسَاوِرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ رُشَيْدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ يَحْيَى ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " احْتَرِسُوا مِنَ النَّاسِ بِسُوءِ الظَّنِّ " .
وَقَالَ : لَا يُرْوَى عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ إِلَّا بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ ، تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ بَقِيَّةُ .
وَقَالَ : لَا يُرْوَى عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ إِلَّا بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ ، تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ بَقِيَّةُ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Use suspicion (that is, adopt a cautious attitude and stay alert) to protect yourselves from (the evil and deception of) people."
Imam al-Tabarani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This hadith is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) only through this chain, and Baqiyyah bin al-Walid is alone in narrating it.

وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْأَنْطَاكِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ ، عَنْ عَطِيَّةَ بْنِ قَيْسٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اخْبُرْ تَقْلَهْ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Test people (that is, when you come to know their inner states and hidden faults), and you will come to dislike them."
In the chain of this hadith, Abu Bakr bin Abi Maryam is a weak narrator; moreover, the hadith scholars have criticised its chain because of the tadlis (concealment in transmission) of Baqiyyah bin al-Walid, and have declared it da'if (weak).
