قَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْمُقْرِي ، عَنِ الْأَفْرِيقِيِّ ، حَدَّثَنِي عُمَارَةُ بْنُ غُرَابٍ ، قَالَ : إِنَّ عَمَّةً لَهُ حَدَّثَتْهُ ، أَنَّهَا سَأَلَتْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا فَذَكَرَتِ الْحَدِيثَ ، قَالَتْ : " سَوْفَ أُخْبِرُكَ مَا صَنَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، إِنَّهَا كَانَتْ لَيْلَتِي مِنْهُ ، فَطَحَنْتُ شَيْئًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ ، وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُ قُرْصًا ، فَرَجَعَ فَرَدَّ الْبَابَ ، وَكَانَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَنَامَ أَغْلَقَ الْبَابَ ، وَأَوْكَأَ الْقِرْبَةَ ، وَأَكْفَأَ الْقَدَحَ وَالصَّحْفَةَ ، وَأَطْفَأَ السِّرَاجَ ، فَانْتَظَرْتُهُ أَنْ يَنْصَرِفَ مِنْ مَسْجِدِهِ فَأُطْعِمَهُ الْقُرْصَ ، فَلَمْ يَنْصَرِفْ حَتَّى غَلَبَنِي النَّوْمُ ، فَأَقْبَلَتْ شَاةٌ لِجَارَتِنَا دَاجِنَةٌ ، فَأَخَذَتْهَا ، ثُمَّ اجْتَرَّتْهَا ، قَالَ : فَقَلِقْتُ ، فَاسْتَيْقَظَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَبَادَرْتُهَا إِلَى الْبَابِ ، فَقَالَ : " خُذِي مَا أَدْرَكْتِ مِنْ قُرْصِكِ ، وَلَا تُؤْذِي جَارَكِ فِي شَاتِهِ " .
Umarah bin Ghurab narrates from his paternal aunt, and she from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that she asked Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) (about some matter), and she, relating (the incident), said: "I will tell you what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did. It was the night of my turn for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to stay with me, so I ground some barley and prepared a loaf of bread from it. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) came (home), he closed the door. It was his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed practice that when he intended to sleep he would close the door, tie up the mouth of the waterskin, turn the cup and the large dish upside down and put out the lamp. I began waiting for him (peace and blessings be upon him) to return from the mosque so that I could present that bread to him (peace and blessings be upon him), but he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not come (for some time) until sleep overcame me. Meanwhile a pet goat of one of our female neighbours came, picked up that bread and began chewing it. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I got up restless (on seeing this), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also woke up, and I rushed after that goat towards the door. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Take whatever part of your bread you can recover, but do not harm your neighbour in the matter of her goat.'"
Imam Ibn Abi Umar recorded this hadith; its chain contains the narrator al-Ifriqi (Abd al-Rahman bin Ziyad), who has been graded weak because of poor memory; however, its first part, comprising the etiquette before sleeping, is also mentioned in other sahih reports.

وَقَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ ، عَنْ خَالِدٍ الْحَذَّاءِ ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ ، عَنْ بَعْضِ آلِ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ : " كَانَ فِرَاشُ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَحْوَ مَا يُوضَعُ الْإِنْسَانُ فِي قَبْرِهِ ، وَكَانَ الْمَسْجِدُ عِنْدَ رَأْسِهِ " .

It is narrated from a member of the household of the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), that he said: "The bed of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was (in its size and shape) roughly like the way a person is placed in his grave (in the lahd), and the mosque (its direction or its wall) was at the side of his head."
