قَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ : حَدَّثَنَا قُرَّانُ بْنُ تَمَّامٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ الْأَسْلَمِيِّ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ أَنْ يَسْجُدَ فَلْيَسْجُدْ ، وَمَنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَلَا يَرْفَعَنَّ إِلَى وَجْهِهِ شَيْئًا ، وَلْيَكُنْ سُجُودُهُ رُكُوعًا ، وَلْيَكُنْ رُكُوعُهُ أَنْ يُومِئَ بِرَأْسِهِ .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever is able to prostrate (on the ground) should prostrate; and whoever is not able to prostrate should not raise anything up to his face (to prostrate on it). Rather, (praying by gestures,) he should make his prostration like a bowing (bending lower than for the bowing), and make his bowing merely a gesture of the head."

وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ ، ثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ أَبِي دَاوُدَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ : عَادَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرِيضًا ، وَأَنَا مَعَهُ ، فَرَآهُ يُصَلِّي ، وَيَسْجُدُ عَلَى وِسَادَةٍ ، فَنَهَاهُ ، وَقَالَ : إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَسْجُدَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ فَاسْجُدْ ، وَإِلَّا فَأَوْمِئْ إِيمَاءً ، وَاجْعَلِ السُّجُودَ أَخْفَضَ مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) visited a sick man, and I was with him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that the man was praying and was prostrating on a pillow (to make his prostration). So he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade him from doing so and said: "If you are able to prostrate on the ground, then prostrate (properly); otherwise, merely gesture, and keep the gesture of your prostration lower (more bent) than that of the bowing."

وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ ، ثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، ثَنَا مُخْتَارُ بْنُ فُلْفُلٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى عَلَى الْأَرْضِ فِي الْمَكْتُوبَةِ قَاعِدًا ، وَفِي التَّسْبِيحِ قَعَدَ فِي الْأَرْضِ فَأَوْمَأَ إِيمَاءً .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the obligatory prayer (due to some excuse) sitting on the ground, and in the voluntary prayer (tasbih) too he sat on the ground and merely used gestures (for the bowing and prostration)."
