قَالَ الْحَارِثُ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ هَاشِمٍ ، ثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقْنُتُ فِي الْفَجْرِ قَبْلَ الرَّكْعَةِ ، وَقَالَ : إِنَّمَا أَقْنُتُ بِكُمْ : لِتَدْعُوا رَبَّكُمْ وَتَسْأَلُوهُ حَاجَتَكُمْ .

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah al-Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite the qunut supplication in the Fajr prayer before the bowing (ruku'), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I make you stand for the qunut only so that you may implore your Lord and ask Him for your needs."

وَقَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ : حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، ثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبَانَ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : إِنَّهُ بَاتَ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَنَتَ قَبْلَ الرَّكْعَةِ ، ثُمَّ أَرْسَلْتُ أُمِّي مِنَ الْقَابِلَةِ ، فَأَخْبَرَتْنِي مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ .
481 \ 2 - وَقَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ : حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ ، ثَنَا أَبَانُ بْنُ أَبِي عَيَّاشٍ فَذَكَرَهُ بِلَفْظِ : بِتُّ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : لِأَنْظُرَ كَيْفَ يَقْنُتُ فِي وِتْرِهِ ؟ : فَقَنَتَ قَبْلَ الرُّكُوعِ ، ثُمَّ بَعَثْتُ أُمِّي أُمَّ عَبْدٍ ، فَقُلْتُ : بِيتِي مَعَ نِسَائِهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَانْظُرِي : كَيْفَ يَقْنُتُ فِي وِتْرِهِ ؟ فَأَخْبَرَتْنِي أَنَّهُ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَنَتَ قَبْلَ الرُّكُوعِ .

481 \ 2 - وَقَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ : حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ ، ثَنَا أَبَانُ بْنُ أَبِي عَيَّاشٍ فَذَكَرَهُ بِلَفْظِ : بِتُّ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : لِأَنْظُرَ كَيْفَ يَقْنُتُ فِي وِتْرِهِ ؟ : فَقَنَتَ قَبْلَ الرُّكُوعِ ، ثُمَّ بَعَثْتُ أُمِّي أُمَّ عَبْدٍ ، فَقُلْتُ : بِيتِي مَعَ نِسَائِهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَانْظُرِي : كَيْفَ يَقْنُتُ فِي وِتْرِهِ ؟ فَأَخْبَرَتْنِي أَنَّهُ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَنَتَ قَبْلَ الرُّكُوعِ .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he once spent the night at the house of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the qunut supplication before the bowing. Then, the next night, I sent my mother, and she too came and told me the same. In the narration of Ahmad bin Mani' the wording is that Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I stayed the night with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in order to see how he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the qunut in his witr prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the qunut before the bowing. Then I sent my mother, Umm Abd, and said to her: Spend the night with the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and observe how he (peace and blessings be upon him) recites the qunut in the witr. She too came and told me that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had recited the qunut before bowing."

قَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ : حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ أَبُو يُوسُفَ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي زِيَادٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ ، قَالَ : قَنَتَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي رِعْلًا وَذَكْوَانَ وَعَضَلًا وَعُصَيَّةَ عَصَتِ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made the qunut supplication in the prayer and implored: 'Allahumma ikfini Ri'lan wa Dhakwana wa Adalan wa Usayyata, asat Allaha wa rasulahu' (O Allah, suffice me against (the evil and mischief of the tribes named) Ri'l, Dhakwan, Adal and Usayyah, who have disobeyed Allah and His Messenger).

وَقَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ : حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، عَنْ شَرِيكٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : لَمْ يَقْنُتِ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَّا شَهْرًا : لَمْ يَقْنُتْ قَبْلَهُ ، وَلَا بَعْدَهُ .
أَبُو حَمْزَةَ : هُوَ مَيْمُونٌ الْأَعْوَرُ : ضَعِيفٌ .
483 \ 2 - وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرٌ : هُوَ ابْنُ الْوَلِيدِ ، ثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، فَذَكَرَهُ بِلَفْظِ : قَنَتَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَهْرًا يَدْعُو عَلَى عُصَيَّةَ ، وَذَكْوَانَ ، فَلَمَّا ظَهَرَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ تَرَكَ الْقُنُوتَ .

483 \ 2 - وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرٌ : هُوَ ابْنُ الْوَلِيدِ ، ثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، فَذَكَرَهُ بِلَفْظِ : قَنَتَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَهْرًا يَدْعُو عَلَى عُصَيَّةَ ، وَذَكْوَانَ ، فَلَمَّا ظَهَرَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ تَرَكَ الْقُنُوتَ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made the qunut supplication for a period of only one month; he (peace and blessings be upon him) never performed qunut before that particular period, nor did he make it his practice after it."
The narrator Abu Hamzah in its chain is in fact Maymun al-A'war, who is graded da'if (weak) in the science of hadith.
Imam Abu Ya'la narrated it with the same chain in these words: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made qunut continuously for one month, in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated against the tribes named Usayyah and Dhakwan; then, when Allah Almighty granted him (peace and blessings be upon him) victory and help over them, he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave up the qunut."

وَقَالَ الْحَارِثُ : حَدَّثَنَا السَّكَنُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ ، ثَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُدَيْرٍ ، قَالَ : ذُكِرَ لِأَبِي مِجْلَزٍ الْقُنُوتُ فِي صَلَاةِ الْغَدَاةِ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعَثَ رَجُلًا إِلَى بَنِي فُلَانٍ ، فَقَالَ : انْظُرْ ، فَإِنْ كَانُوا أَذِنُوا فَجَاوِزْهُمْ إِلَى بَنِي فُلَانٍ ، فَلَمَّا أَتَاهُمْ يَسْأَلُهُمْ ، قَالَ : فَدَخَلَ رَجُلٌ ، فَلَبِسَ لَأْمَتَهُ - يَعْنِي سِلَاحَهُ - ثُمَّ خَرَجَ إِلَى رَسُولِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَطْعَنُهُ ، فَصَرَعَهُ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي رَسُولُ رَسُولِكَ : اقْرَأْ عَلَيْهِ مِنِّي السَّلَامَ ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامُ ، فَقَالَ الْقَوْمُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ : مَا رَأَيْنَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ ! ، فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : إِنَّ فُلَانًا قُتِلَ ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ السَّلَامَ ، فَقَامَ بِهِمْ شَهْرًا فِي آخِرِ صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ يَقُولُ : اللَّهُمَّ عَلَيْكَ بِبَنِي عُصَيَّةَ : عَصَوْا رَبَّهُمْ ، وَعَلَيْكَ بِبَنِي ذَكْوَانَ ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ تَرَكَهُ ، لَمْ يَكُنْ غَيْرُهُ .

It is narrated from Abu Mijlaz (may Allah have mercy on him) that the qunut supplication in the morning (Fajr) prayer was mentioned before him, and he related that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a man to such-and-such a tribe and instructed him: "Go and see; if they have called the adhan (that is, they have accepted Islam), leave them and go on to such-and-such a tribe." When that messenger reached them and began questioning them, a man went inside, put on his armour, that is, his weapons, came out, struck the messenger of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with a spear and threw him to the ground (and martyred him). At that moment the messenger of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) implored: 'Allahumma inni rasulu rasulika, iqra' alayhi minni al-salam' (O Allah, I am the envoy sent by Your Messenger; convey my greeting of peace to him from me). (Meanwhile, in Madinah,) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) suddenly said: "Wa alaykum al-salam (and upon you be peace)." The people present there said: O Messenger of Allah, we have not seen anyone here (so whom are you answering)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "So-and-so has been martyred, and he has sent me the greeting of peace." After this incident, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood for a month in the last part of the Fajr prayer to supplicate against them, saying: 'Allahumma alayka bi-Bani Usayyah, asaw rabbahum, wa alayka bi-Bani Dhakwan' (O Allah, seize Banu Usayyah, for they have disobeyed their Lord, and seize Banu Dhakwan as well). The narrator said: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) abandoned it, and apart from this incident he (peace and blessings be upon him) never recited the qunut.

وَقَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ : حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ ، أَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ التَّيْمِيُّ ، عَنْ أَبِي مِجْلَزٍ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لِابْنِ عُمَرَ وَابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمُ : الْكِبَرُ يَمْنَعُكُمَا مِنَ الْقُنُوتِ ؟ قَالَا : لَمْ نَأْخُذْهُ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا .

It is narrated from Abu Mijlaz (may Allah have mercy on him) that he asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): "Is it old age that prevents you both from reciting the qunut supplication?" Those two eminent Companions replied: "We did not take this practice from our companions and predecessors (the Companions)."
