قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ الْعَبْدِيُّ ، ثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْمُؤَمَّلِ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ - يُقَالُ لَهَا : بُسْرَةُ - إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، إِحْدَانَا تَرَى أَنَّهَا مَعَ زَوْجِهَا فِي الْمَنَامِ ؟ فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا وَجَدْتِ بَلَلًا فَاغْتَسِلِي يَا بُسْرَةُ " . قَالَ : فَقَالَتْ لَهَا عَائِشَةُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا : فَضَحْتِ النِّسَاءَ ! قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " دَعِيهَا تَسْأَلُ عَمَّا بَدَا لَهَا ، تَرِبَ جَبِينُكِ ، أَوْ تَرِبَتْ يَمِينُكِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a woman named Busrah (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! One of us women sees (in a dream) that she is with her husband (that is, she has a wet dream; what is the ruling)?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Busrah! When you find wetness (on waking), take a bath." The narrator states that at this Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to her (out of modesty): "You have disgraced the women!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her)): "Leave her; she is asking about the matter that has arisen for her. 'Tariba jabinuki, aw taribat yaminuki' (May your forehead be covered in dust, or may your right hand be covered in dust)."
Takhrij and grading: the chain of this narration contains Abdullah bin al-Mu'ammal, a weak narrator; however, the obligation of ghusl upon finding wetness after a wet dream is established by other authentic and reliable hadith.

وَقَالَ إِسْحَاقُ : أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُوسَى ، ثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ رُفَيْعٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، حَدَّثَتْنِي أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ أُمُّ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا ، قَالَتْ : أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، إِحْدَانَا تَرَى فِي مَنَامِهَا مَا يَرَى الرَّجُلُ ؟ فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " هَلْ تَجِدُ شَهْوَةً ؟ " قَالَتْ : لَعَلَّهُ . قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " فَهَلْ تَجِدُ مَاءً ؟ " قَالَتْ : لَعَلَّهُ . قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " فَلْتَغْتَسِلْ " .
هَذَا سَنَدٌ صَحِيحٌ ، لَكِنْ لَهُ عِلَّةٌ .
194 \ 2 - قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ : أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ رُفَيْعٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، وَعَطَاءٍ ، وَمُجَاهِدٍ ، قَالُوا : إِنَّ أُمَّ سُلَيْمٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا سَأَلَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَذَكَرَ مِثْلَهُ وَقَالَ : " بَلَلًا " بَدَلَ " مَاءً " .
وَقَالَ فِي آخِرِهِ : " قَالَ : إِذَا رَأَتْ ذَلِكَ فَلْتَغْتَسِلْ . فَلَقِيَهَا نِسْوَةٌ فَقُلْنَ لَهَا : فَضَحْتِينَا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ! فَقَالَتْ : مَا كُنْتُ لِأَنْتَهِيَ حَتَّى أَعْلَمَ أَنَا فِي حَلَالٍ أَمْ فِي حَرَامٍ " !
قُلْتُ : وَأَصْلُ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ عِنْدَ النَّسَائِيِّ مِنْ طَرِيقِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، عَنْ أُمِّ سُلَيْمٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا .
وَأَخْرَجَهُ مُسْلِمٌ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ عَنْ سَعِيدٍ ، لَكِنَّ ظَاهِرَ سِيَاقِهِ أَنَّهُ مِنْ مُسْنَدِ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ .
وَأَصْلُ الْقِصَّةِ فِي الصَّحِيحَيْنِ مِنْ طَرِيقِ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قَالَتْ : جَاءَتْ أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا .
هَذَا سَنَدٌ صَحِيحٌ ، لَكِنْ لَهُ عِلَّةٌ .

وَقَالَ فِي آخِرِهِ : " قَالَ : إِذَا رَأَتْ ذَلِكَ فَلْتَغْتَسِلْ . فَلَقِيَهَا نِسْوَةٌ فَقُلْنَ لَهَا : فَضَحْتِينَا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ! فَقَالَتْ : مَا كُنْتُ لِأَنْتَهِيَ حَتَّى أَعْلَمَ أَنَا فِي حَلَالٍ أَمْ فِي حَرَامٍ " !

وَأَصْلُ الْقِصَّةِ فِي الصَّحِيحَيْنِ مِنْ طَرِيقِ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قَالَتْ : جَاءَتْ أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا .
It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) (who is the mother of Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him)) that she said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Do we women also see in a dream what a man sees (in a wet dream)?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Does she feel desire and pleasure?" She said: "Perhaps, yes." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked again: "Then does she also find water or moisture (on waking)?" She said: "Perhaps it is so." At this he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then she should take a bath."
This chain is apparently sahih (authentic), but it has a hidden technical defect ('illah). Imam Ishaq narrated the same incident through another route, in which the word "wetness or moisture" occurs instead of "water", and at its end it is also narrated that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a woman sees something like that in a dream, she should take a bath." (Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) relates that) then some women met me and said (out of modesty): "You have disgraced us before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (by openly asking such a shameful matter)!" At this she replied: "I would never refrain (from asking religious questions) until I come to know whether I am in a state of the lawful or the unlawful (that is, whether my worship is valid or not)."
I (Ibn Hajar) say: The basis of this hadith is in Sunan al-Nasa'i through the chain of Sa'id bin Abi Arubah from Qatadah from Anas from Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with them both), while Imam Muslim narrated it through another route from Sa'id himself, but its context makes it apparent that it is from the Musnad of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him). Also, the basis of this story is in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim through the narration of Zaynab bint Umm Salamah from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), that Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the Prophet.

It is narrated from Sulayman bin Atiq that a woman came to Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: "I saw in a dream as if so-and-so were having intercourse with me." Then Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When she sees wetness or moisture (after waking from the dream), she should take a bath."
Imam Ishaq bin Rahwayh narrated this hadith in his Musnad, and it is evidence that a woman too can have a wet dream like a man, but ghusl becomes obligatory only when traces (moisture) are found after waking.
