Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 783 — The command to be patient

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a woman at al-Baqi' (graveyard) who was sitting on her knees at a grave, weeping. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "O servant of Allah! Fear Allah and be patient." She replied: "O servant of Allah! I am a grieving mother whose child has been taken from her." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said again: "O servant of Allah! Fear Allah and be patient." She said: "O servant of Allah! I have heard (your advice), so now please go away from me." The narrator said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went on from there; then one of his Companions followed him, stopped by that woman and asked her: "What did the man who just left here say to you?" She said that he had said such-and-such (words of patience) to her. He asked: "Did you even recognise him?" She said: "No." That man said: "That was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." (On hearing this) the woman, alarmed, sprang up quickly and (coming to him (peace and blessings be upon him)) began to say: "O Messenger of Allah! I will be patient, I will now be patient." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "True patience is that which is shown at the first blow of the calamity; patience is (to be shown) at the very beginning of the calamity."
This hadith is hasan (good), because although some hadith scholars have criticised Abu Ubaydah (al-Naji), there is a strong supporting report for the basis of this hadith from the narration of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), which Imam al-Bukhari and other imams have narrated in their books.
