Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 4477 — Warning against fighting the Turks

It is narrated from Mu'awiyah bin Hudayj (may Allah be pleased with him): I was present with Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) when a letter came to him from one of his agents (governors), in which he reported that he had clashed with the Turks and inflicted a crushing defeat on them, and he also reported killing many of them and obtaining a large amount of spoils. On learning all this, Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) became very angry and ordered that this be written to him: "I have understood what you mentioned about killing the Turks and gathering spoils. Let me never learn that you have repeated anything of the kind, and do not fight them at all until my clear order reaches you." I asked him: "O Commander of the Believers! Why do you say this?" He replied: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The Turks will drive the Arabs into exile, until they push them to the regions where shih and qaysum (wild desert herbs) grow." So because of this fear I dislike fighting them.
Musnad Abi Ya'la: 4477. There is criticism of the chain of this narration because some of its narrators are unknown; however, the meaning of not provoking the Turks without need is also established by other sahih hadith.
