It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Yasar al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him): I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Time will not come to an end until the Qur'an (its effect and influence) becomes worn out and old in the breasts of some groups of this Ummah, just as clothing becomes worn out; other things besides the Qur'an will become more pleasing and more wondrous to them. All their affairs will be based entirely on greed and covetousness, without the slightest fear of Allah mixed in. If they fall short in fulfilling any right of Allah Almighty, their souls will keep them deluded with false hopes and wishes; and if they commit any sin that Allah has forbidden, they will say (with great boldness): 'I hope that Allah Almighty will overlook this slip of mine.' Their hearts will be like those of wolves (hard and bloodthirsty), over which they will have put on cloaks like sheepskins (soft and simple). In their view, the best of them will be the one who is 'al-mudahin' (the one who compromises and indulges in misplaced expediency)."
It was asked what is meant by "al-mudahin", and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who (out of expediency regarding circumstances) neither enjoins good nor forbids evil."
