It is narrated from al-Hakam (may Allah have mercy on him) that when the day of the Battle of the Camel came and the armies had lined up, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) called Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him). He came to him, and he said: "I ask you by Allah Almighty, do you not remember that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to you): 'You will surely fight him (Ali) while you are wronging him'?" Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Allah, yes!" (I now remember it), then he said: "This did not come to my mind before standing in this place." So he turned back (from the battlefield). When his companion, namely Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), saw him (going back), he too followed him. Then Marwan shot him with an arrow which pinned his thigh to the iron of the saddle (that is, the thigh became fixed to the saddle).
And Imam Ahmad bin Mani' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Abu Ahmad narrated to us, from Abu Isra'il, this report with the same chain.
