قَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْفُضَيْلِ بْنِ عِيَاضٍ ، ثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، ثَنَا السَّرِيُّ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنْ وَابِصَةَ بْنِ مَعْبَدٍ ، قَالَ : ( انْصَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَرَجُلٌ يُصَلِّي خَلْفَ الْقَوْمِ وَحْدَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُصَلِّي وَحْدَهُ ، أَلَا تَكُونُ وَصَلْتَ صَفًّا فَدَخَلْتَ مَعَهُمْ ، أَوِ اجْتَرَرْتَ إِلَيْكَ رَجُلًا إِنْ ضَاقَ بِكُمُ الْمَكَانُ ؟ أَعِدْ صَلَاتَكَ ، فَإِنَّهُ لَا صَلَاةَ لَكَ ) .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Wabisah bin Ma'bad (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer and saw a man praying alone behind the rows of the people. He (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed him and said: "O you who prays alone! Could you not have joined a row and entered with them, or, if the place was too narrow for you, did you not pull a man (from the row) towards yourself? Repeat your prayer, for (being alone behind the row) your prayer is not valid."
Imam Abu Ya'la transmitted this report through the chain of Abu Ubaydah bin Fudayl bin Iyad, Malik bin Sa'd and al-Sari bin Isma'il, via Imam al-Sha'bi, under the heading: one who comes alone and finds the row complete (what is the ruling for him).
