It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep accepting gifts (from the rulers) as long as they remain mere gifts; but when they become a bribe in exchange for your religion, then never accept them. Yet the reality is that you will not be able to give them up, because the awe (of the rulers) and the fear of poverty will prevent you from doing so. Beware! The mill of Islam and faith is turning, so stay with the Book of Allah wherever it takes you. Know that soon political power and the Qur'an will part ways; in such a situation, never let go of the Qur'an. Listen! Rulers and governors will be imposed upon you such that if you follow them they will lead you astray from the right path, and if you disobey them they will put you to death." The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What should we do then? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Adopt the same way that the companions of Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) adopted: they were hung upon wooden beams (crucified) and their bodies were sawn apart with saws (yet they remained firm upon the truth). Indeed, dying in obedience to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is far better than living a life of disobedience and sin against Him."
This hadith was narrated by Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir (20/90, no. 172) and by Imam Abu Nu'aym in Hilyat al-Awliya'. Its chain contains a narrator named Suwayd bin Abd al-Aziz, who is da'if (weak), because of which Allamah al-Albani and other muhaddithun declared its chain weak; however, supporting evidence for some of its parts is found in other authentic hadiths.
