It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during his illness, and a red band was tied around his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed head, or (the narrator is unsure) perhaps it was a yellow band. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O my cousin! Take this band and tie my head tightly with it." I tied his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed head with it, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) leaned on me until we entered the mosque. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said (addressing the people): "O people! I am only a human being like you, and it may well be that the time of my departure from among you has drawn near. So if I have harmed anyone's honour, or done any harm to anyone's body, hair or wealth, then here is the honour, hair, body and wealth of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him); let that person stand up and take his retribution (from me). And let none of you say: I fear enmity and rancour from Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Listen! Neither of these is part of my nature, nor part of my character." The narrator said: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went back.
The next day I went to him (peace and blessings be upon him) again, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O my cousin! I do not think that my standing up (and announcing) yesterday was sufficient for me. Take this band and tie my head tightly with it." Al-Fadl said: I tied his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed head with it, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) leaned on me until he came into the mosque and said what he had said the day before. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) further said: "The dearest of you to us is the one who takes his retribution (if he has a right)." The narrator said: At this a man stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! Do you remember the day a beggar came to you and asked you, and you (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who has something to lend us?" and I lent you three dirhams? So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Fadl! Give him (those dirhams)." So I gave them to him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever is overcome by some (moral or physical weakness), let him tell us so that we may supplicate for him." So a man stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! I am a cowardly man and in the habit of sleeping a great deal. Sayyiduna al-Fadl said: (By the blessing of his (peace and blessings be upon him) supplication) I later saw that this man had become the bravest of us all and the one who slept the least.
The narrator said: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to the house of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said to the women there the same as he had said to the men.
