Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 4309 — The Battle of Hunain

It is narrated from a man who was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the Battle of Hunayn (on the side of the polytheists) that he said: "When we met the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in battle, they could not stand their ground before us even for as long as it takes to milk a goat, and we routed them. While we were still driving them before us in pursuit, we reached the rider of the white or greyish mule (the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)). There we encountered men whose faces were exceedingly bright and radiant. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'May these faces be disfigured! Turn back.' So, overawed by their words, we were routed and fled, and they rode upon our shoulders (that is, pursued us hard), and that was the decisive defeat."
All the narrators in the chain of this hadith are thiqat (trustworthy), and this report is sahih (authentic).
