It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah al-Damri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me and, with me, one of the Ansari Companions towards Makkah, and ordered: "Both of you go to Abu Sufyan bin Harb and kill him in the courtyard of his house." The people of Makkah got wind of us, so we climbed to the top of a mountain. There a man of Banu Tamim came upon us, and I killed him; then I hid in a cave. There a man of Banu Dil bin Bakr came and entered the cave with us. I asked him: "Who are you?" He said: "I am from Banu Bakr." I said: "I too am from Banu Bakr." He lay down there and, raising his voice, began singing this verse: 'Lastu bi-muslimin ma dumtu hayyan, wa la danin bi-dini al-muslimina' (As long as I live I will never be a Muslim, nor will I follow the religion of the Muslims). I said (to myself): "Go to sleep, and you will soon know the truth." When he fell asleep, I killed him. Then I came out from there and met two men of Quraysh whom they had sent to bring news. I said to them: "Hand yourselves over to me and become captives." One of them refused, so I killed him, while the other agreed to become a captive, and I brought him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). In another narration Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me, and sent with me a man of the Ansar, after Sayyiduna Khubayb and his companions (may Allah be pleased with them) had been martyred, and he said: "Kill Abu Sufyan in the courtyard of his house." So my companion and I set out until we reached Batn Ya'jij from the side of the pass. My companion was an easy-going man who was not used to travelling, so I said to him: "If you fear anything, go to your camel and ride it until you join the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." My companion said to me: "Would you like to circumambulate the House?" I said: "I know the people of Makkah well; when darkness falls they sprinkle (water on) their courtyards and sit in them, and I am more easily recognised among them than a piebald horse." But he kept on at me until we had performed seven circuits of tawaf. Then we went out until we passed by their gatherings, and they said: "This is Amr; by Allah, he has not come for any good." (Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) was a fearless and daring man who was called al-Khali'.) He said: So we hurried off until we climbed the mountain, and I entered a cave, and there was Uthman bin Malik, or Ubaydullah bin Malik al-Taymi, cutting fodder for his horse. When he came near the cave, I said to my companion: "By Allah, if this man sees us he will certainly lead them to us." So I went out to him and stabbed him with my dagger beneath his breast, dealing him a fatal blow, and he let out a scream that made the people of Makkah hear him. They came, and I went back to my place (the cave) and entered it. The people of Makkah came and found some life still left in him, and they said: "Who stabbed you?" He said: "Amr bin Umayyah." Then he died, and they could not get enough out of him for him to tell them where we were. Then we went out, and there was Sayyiduna Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) on his wooden post. My companion said to me: "Would you take Khubayb down from his post and bury him?" I said: "Yes; move away from me, and if I am late in coming to you, take the road." So I went to Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him), took him down from his post and carried him on my back, and I had not walked twenty cubits with him when the guards came upon me, for they had set guards over him. So I threw him down, and I do not forget the thud of his falling on the ground when I threw him down. Then I took the route through al-Safrawat until I came down into al-Alil, the Alil of Dajnan, while they were pursuing me, and I entered a cave; then he mentioned the story of the man whom he killed. Then I came out of the cave into country that I knew well, then I took the Rakubah route, and I saw two men whom Quraysh had sent to spy out news. I said to one of them: "Surrender as a captive"; he refused, so I shot him and killed him, and the other surrendered as a captive, and I brought him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). In another chain it is stated that Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) had gone alone to spy; when he brought Sayyiduna Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) down from the cross, he fell to the ground. Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) turned for a moment, and Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) had vanished from there, as though the earth had swallowed him, and to this day no trace of his body has been found.
Imam Ishaq bin Rahwayh, Wahb bin Jarir and Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah related this event through various chains, which include great imams such as Muhammad bin Ishaq and al-Zuhri. This event is one of the important events of the Prophet's biography, in which the bravery of Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah and the miracle (karamah) of Sayyiduna Khubayb are mentioned.
