Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 4208 — The love of his grandfather

Kindir bin Sa'id narrates from his father that he stated: "I performed Hajj in the time of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah), and I saw a man circumambulating the House of Allah while chanting these verses: «Rudda ilayya rakibi Muhammadan, ruddah ilayya wastani' 'indi yada» 'O my Lord, return my rider Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to me; bring him back to me and do me this favour.' I asked who this man was. The people said: 'This is Abd al-Muttalib bin Hashim. Some of his camels went missing, so he sent one of his sons (his grandson) to search for them, but he has been delayed in returning, whereas the situation was that whenever he sent him for any task, he would return only after accomplishing it.'" The narrator says: I was still there when Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived with the camels, and Abd al-Muttalib said (on seeing him): "O my dear son, by Allah, this time I have grieved so much at your separation that I have never felt such grief; from now on you will never be separated from me."
Imam al-Hakim also narrated it in a similar way, and at its end are these words: "O my dear son, I became so restless and anxious for you as I had never been for anything. By Allah, I will never again send you on any errand (alone), and after this you will never be separated from me."
