Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 4018 — The virtue of Safwan bin al-Mu'attal

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Safinah (may Allah be pleased with him) (the bearer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)'s provisions) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on a journey, and the camel carrying his (peace and blessings be upon him) provisions was with him. Then Sayyiduna Safwan bin al-Mu'attal (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said: "I am very hungry." He replied: "I will not give you anything until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commands me and the people halt so that we may eat." The narrator says: Upon this he struck with his sword and cut the camel's hamstring. He relates: Whenever some such matter befell them, they would call out: "Hold back the front ones! Hold back the front ones!" So the people heard this call and halted. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw what Safwan bin al-Mu'attal had done to the camel, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Leave this place," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the people to move on. So Sayyiduna Safwan bin al-Mu'attal (may Allah be pleased with him) kept following behind them until, when the people halted, he went to their tents and began saying: "Where has the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) driven me out to? Has he driven me out to the Fire?" The narrator says: The people came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, since last night Safwan bin al-Mu'attal has been going around our tents in remorse, saying: 'Where has the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) driven me out to? Has he driven me out to the Fire?'"
So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Safwan bin al-Mu'attal is harsh of tongue but most pure of heart."
