حَدَّثَنَا الْفَضْلُ هُوَ أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، ثَنَا فِطْرُ بْنُ خَلِيفَةَ ، أَخْبَرَنِي حَبِيبُ بْنُ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ : وَاللهِ إِنَّهُ لَعَهْدُ النَّبِيِّ الْأُمِّيِّ : سَيَغْدِرُونَكَ مِنْ بَعْدِي .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "By Allah! Indeed, this is the covenant of the unlettered Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (with me): 'Soon after me people will act with disloyalty and treachery towards you.'"
Imam Ahmad narrated this hadith in al-Musnad. According to the hadith scholars there is criticism of it because of some narrators in its chain; however, on the basis of its many routes and supporting reports, some imams have accepted it at the level of hasan (good).
