It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that (the Companions) were permitted to cut down the date palms, then they were dealt with strictly in this matter. So they came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Is there any sin upon us for the trees we cut down or for those we left standing?" At this Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this blessed verse: "Whatever palm trees (linah, fine date palms) you cut down or left standing on their roots, it was all by the command and permission of Allah" [Surah al-Hashr: 5].
Imam Abu Ya'la related this hadith in his Musnad and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy); the origin of this event is also found in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
