Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 3748 — Surah al-Hashr

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "There was a monk who used to worship in seclusion in his hermitage. There was a woman who had several brothers; she was afflicted by some mental disorder or fit of madness, so her brothers brought her to that monk (for treatment or ruqyah). Then Satan made the woman's beauty appear so adorned and attractive in the monk's eyes that he fell into her temptation and committed the evil act with her, as a result of which the woman became pregnant. Then Satan came to him and, misleading him, said: 'Kill this woman, for if her brothers learn of this deed of yours, you will be utterly disgraced.' So he killed her and buried her in the ground. Then her brothers came (to ask after her), and when the truth came out they seized him and set off with him. While they were taking him away, Satan came to him again and said: 'I am the one who made this sin attractive to you; now just make one prostration to me and I will rescue you from this calamity.' So he (in his greed to save his life) prostrated to Satan (and committed disbelief). This is the event alluded to in this statement of Allah Almighty: 'Like Satan, when he said to man, Disbelieve; then when he disbelieved, Satan said: I am disgusted with you and free of you' [Surah al-Hashr: 16]."
Imam Ishaq bin Rahwayh recorded this report in his Musnad; although this report is open to question in terms of its chain, it is well known and widely circulated among the exegetes in explaining the meaning of this verse of the Noble Qur'an and the deception of Satan.
