It is narrated from a man among the descendants of Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that he said: I think that the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), stated that Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) and a man had a dispute, so they took their case to the court of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) judged in favour of Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him). Thereupon that man said (insolently): "You (peace and blessings be upon him) judged in his favour only because he is your paternal aunt's son," and he taunted with his tongue. Seeing this, a Jew spoke up: "Look at this man! He is finding fault with his own Prophet, whereas we are far more obedient to our Prophet than these people; our Prophet commanded us to kill ourselves, and we killed ourselves (in compliance with the divine command 'So kill yourselves' [Surah al-Baqarah: 54])."
Takhrij: This report is found in Musnad Ishaq bin Rahwayh (hadith: 1843), and the basis of this story is narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari (2359) and Sahih Muslim (2357) from Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him); however, this comment of the Jew has also been transmitted by Ibn Abi Hatim and other imams in their Tafsirs.
