It is narrated from Sayyiduna Usayd bin Hudayr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Once I was praying at night when suddenly I saw some lights like lamps descending from the sky. When I saw this sight I fell into prostration (out of intense awe). Then I mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Atik! Why did you not continue (your recitation)?" He said: (O Messenger of Allah!) When I saw that sight I had no strength left and I fell down in prostration. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had you continued (your recitation), you would certainly have witnessed great wonders. Those were angels descending for (listening to the recitation of) the Qur'an."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic).
