It is narrated from Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the reality of faith (iman), and in reply he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this noble verse: Righteousness is not that you turn your faces towards the east and the west [Surah al-Baqarah: 177].
This narration is mursal; its chain is sahih (authentic), and it also has a supporting report (shahid).
