It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Any man who has no wealth from which he could give charity should make this supplication: 'Allahumma salli ala Muhammadin abdika wa rasulika, wa salli ala al-mu'minina wa al-mu'minati wa al-muslimina wa al-muslimat' (O Allah, send blessings and peace upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), Your servant and Your Messenger, and send mercy upon all the believing men and believing women, and all the Muslim men and Muslim women); then indeed this deed of his will be zakah for him (that is, purification of the soul and a substitute for charity of wealth)."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this hadith in his Musnad, and Imam Ibn Hibban also included it in his Sahih; although there is criticism concerning its chain, this narration is accepted as reliable and authoritative in the chapter of virtues.
