It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Appoint me to some service or post by which I can arrange my livelihood and life." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Hamzah! Is a soul to which you give life (and protection) dearer to you, or a soul which you put to death?" He said: "A soul to which I give life." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then hold fast to your own soul (its protection and reform)."
Musnad Abi Ya'la: 3234. There is weakness in the chain of this narration because of the memory of the narrator Ibn Lahi'ah, though the meaning of the hadith encourages avoiding the grave responsibilities of office and position and focusing on the reform and safety of one's own self.
