قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، حَدَّثَنِي الصَّعْقُ بْنُ حَزْنٍ الْبَكْرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَقِيلٌ الْجَعْدِيُّ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ السَّبِيعِيِّ ، عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : دَخَلْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ : يَا ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ أَتَدْرِي أَيُّ عُرَى الْإِيمَانِ أَوْثَقُ ؟ ، فَقُلْتُ : لَبَّيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ ، حَتَّى قَالَ لِي ثَلَاثًا ، قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : فَإِنَّ أَوْثَقَ عُرَى الْإِيمَانِ الْحُبُّ فِي اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ، وَالْبُغْضُ فِي اللهِ تَعَالَى ، ثُمَّ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِي : يَا ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ ، قُلْتُ : لَبَّيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَتَدْرِي أَيُّ النَّاسِ أَفْضَلُ ؟ ، قُلْتُ : اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ ، حَتَّى قَالَهَا ثَلَاثًا ، قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : فَإِنَّ أَفْضَلَهُمْ عِلْمًا إِذَا فَقِهُوا فِي دِينِهِمْ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : يَا ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ ، قُلْتُ : لَبَّيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَتَدْرِي أَيُّ النَّاسِ أَعْلَمُ ؟ ، حَتَّى قَالَهَا ثَلَاثًا ، قُلْتُ : اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ ، قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَعْلَمُهُمْ أَبْصَرُهُمْ بِالْحَقِّ إِذَا اخْتَلَفَ النَّاسُ ، وَإِنْ كَانَ مُقَصِّرًا فِي الْعَمَلِ ، وَإِنْ كَانَ يَزْحَفُ عَلَى اسْتِهِ .
3022 \ 2 - وَقَالَ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ : حَدَّثَنَا الصَّعْقُ ، فَذَكَرَهُ مُخْتَصَرًا .
3022 \ 3 - وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا الصَّعْقُ ، كَذَلِكَ .
3022 \ 2 - وَقَالَ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ : حَدَّثَنَا الصَّعْقُ ، فَذَكَرَهُ مُخْتَصَرًا .
3022 \ 3 - وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا الصَّعْقُ ، كَذَلِكَ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I came into the noble presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Ibn Mas'ud, do you know which handhold of faith is the firmest?" I said: "At your service, O Messenger of Allah! Allah and His Messenger know best." He (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated this question to me three times, and I gave the same answer. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the firmest handhold of faith is to love someone for the pleasure of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and to hate someone for the sake of Allah." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Ibn Mas'ud!" I said: "At your service, O Messenger of Allah!" He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you know which of the people is the most excellent?" I said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked this three times. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the most excellent of them are those with knowledge who have deep understanding (fiqh) of their religion." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ibn Mas'ud!" I said: "At your service, O Messenger of Allah!" He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you know which of the people is the most knowledgeable?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked this three times, and I said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The greatest scholar among people is the one who has the most insight into and recognition of the truth when people fall into disagreement (due to differing opinions), even if he falls somewhat short in deeds, and even if he (due to physical weakness or an excuse) has to drag himself along on his backside."
Al-Tayalisi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Al-Sa'q narrated to us, then he mentioned it in abridged form.
And Abu Ya'la (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Shayban narrated to us from al-Sa'q likewise.
