It is narrated from one of the companions of Abu Ishaq that once the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was travelling when he (peace and blessings be upon him) came upon the grave of a man, whom the narrator named. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said (on seeing it): "May Allah Almighty curse the occupant of this grave," for he was an enemy of Allah. The narrator said: The son of that (deceased) man was also travelling with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said (in reply): Rather, "May Allah Almighty curse Abu Quhafah"; by Allah, he neither honoured the guest nor fought the enemy. At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not revile the dead, for (by doing so) you hurt the living."
The chain of this narration contains an unnamed narrator; however, the prohibition of insulting the dead is established by other sahih (authentic) hadith.
