Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 2713 — Prohibition of obscenity

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he used to say: "The one who utters obscene and indecent speech and the one who listens to it (attentively) are equal in the burden of sin."
Imam al-Bukhari narrated this report in al-Adab al-Mufrad (324) and Ibn Abi Shaybah in al-Musannaf (25547). Its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), but Hassan bin Kurayb's hearing from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is not established.
