قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحِيمِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَسْلَمَ يُقَالُ لَهُ ابْنُ الْأَدْرَعِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " تَمَعْدَدُوا ، وَاخْشَوْشِنُوا ، وَامْشُوا حُفَاةً ، وَانْتَضِلُوا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn al-Adra' (may Allah be pleased with him), who belonged to the tribe of Aslam, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Become hardy like (your forefather) Ma'add bin Adnan, give up luxury and ease and accustom yourselves to toughness, sometimes walk barefoot as well, and practise and compete in archery."
Imam Ibn Abi Shaybah recorded this hadith in his book al-Musannaf; most hadith scholars have declared the narrator in its chain, Abdullah bin Sa'id bin Abi Sa'id al-Maqburi, weak, although supporting reports for some of its parts are found in other reliable books of hadith.
