It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, (sometimes) a man has a lofty station and rank (appointed) with Allah Almighty which he cannot reach merely through his deeds; so Allah, Glorified and Exalted, continually afflicts him with things and trials that he dislikes, until He brings him to that lofty rank."
Abu Ya'la reported it in his Musnad through the chain of Uqbah bin Mukram from Yunus, and Ibn Hibban declared this hadith sahih.
