It is narrated from Amr bin Shu'ayb (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man of the Ansar, whom I think was Abd al-Rahman, said: I took my bow and hunted some birds with it; some of them I slaughtered (that is, I found them alive and slaughtered them in the lawful way), while for some I could not perform the slaughter (that is, they had died from the arrow or I could not slaughter them). Then I met Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud, Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit and Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with them), and I began to separate the lawfully slaughtered birds. They asked: "What is this?" I said: "These are the ones I slaughtered, and these are the ones I could not slaughter." So they mixed them all together and said: "We heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Eat whatever your bow brings back to you (by hunting).'"
