Ka'b bin Alqamah relates that Sayyiduna Ghurfah bin al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), said to Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him): "When you sit with us, you recline among us leaning on a cushion; so do not do this again, for if you do it again I will write to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) (about this matter)." Then Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) did the same thing again, so Sayyiduna Ghurfah (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote the letter, as a result of which the messenger of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: (The Commander of the Believers orders:) "It has reached me that when you sit with your companions, you recline among them like the non-Arabs (a'ajim). Beware! Never do so. As long as you sit with them, sit (with humility and modesty), and when you enter your house, then do whatever you like." Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Ghurfah (may Allah be pleased with him): "You have had this (conduct of mine) established (as a fault) against me before Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)." Sayyiduna Ghurfah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "You have never found me a liar." The narrator relates that after this incident, whenever Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to recline, he would remember this warning and (immediately) sit up straight and say: "Allah alone is (the judge) between me and Ghurfah." Then one day they set out (on some journey or campaign); there was thick fog that day, and the horse of Sayyiduna Ghurfah (may Allah be pleased with him) went ahead of the horse of Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), (remembering the earlier displeasure,) said: "This is not the first (unpleasant) day I have had at Ghurfah's hands." When Sayyiduna Ghurfah (may Allah be pleased with him) was told that the governor had said such-and-such, he said: "(By Allah!) Because of the fog I did not see him at all." He was told to apologise to him. He said: "Do not accustom them (the rulers) to this." But the people kept insisting until he came to him and said: "Because of the fog I did not see you at all." Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Allah, forgive," (then he said:) "If you had wished, you could have held back your horse." At this Sayyiduna Ghurfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said (in anger): "By Allah! I truly wished it had thrown you onto some farthest rock of the pasture. I am offering you the excuse of the fog, that I did not see you, and you (instead of accepting the apology) say 'O Allah, forgive' (as if the fault were mine)?" Then Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), (to settle the matter,) said: "O Abu al-Harith! I saw you on such-and-such a day with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) riding a very well-trained horse; shall we not mount you on a (fine) horse?" He replied: "O Amr! My experience of you has not been that you give people horses to ride; so where has this (generosity) come from?"
This narration is in Musnad Abi Ya'la (2122), and Allamah al-Haythami mentioned it in Majma' al-Zawa'id.
