It is narrated from Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Ji'ranah, and whenever I passed by any cavalry troop of the Ansar, they would say to me (stopping me): "Get back, get back!" until, when I reached near the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I raised the document (the letter of safe conduct) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! It is I (Suraqah)," for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had had a letter of safe conduct written for me on a piece of leather at the time of the Hijrah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, today is a day of keeping faith, kindness and truthfulness." In another narration, Sayyiduna Suraqah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Ji'ranah, and whenever I passed by any troop of the Ansar, they would knock me on the head (with their spears or bows) and say: "Get away, get away!" until I reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When I saw him (peace and blessings be upon him), I said: "O Messenger of Allah! It is I (that same Suraqah)," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, today is a day of keeping faith, kindness and truthfulness." Imam Sufyan bin Uyaynah (may Allah have mercy on him) said that by his words "It is I" he meant: I am that same man of the safe conduct for whom you wrote a safe conduct on a piece of leather. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had written a letter of safe conduct for him when he (peace and blessings be upon him) met him on the day of the Hijrah while setting out for the cave, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was also with him (peace and blessings be upon him). In the first chain, Imam Sufyan had doubt about some of what he had memorised from al-Zuhri being mixed up with what Wa'il bin Dawud told him; there is also mention of doubt, in the link to al-Zuhri, whether it was Ibn Suraqah or Suraqah's nephew; whereas in the second chain this report is transmitted by way of Ibn Suraqah bin Malik, from Suraqah's nephew, from Suraqah.
