It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that "the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote a letter to the tribe of Bakr bin Wa'il: 'Min Muhammadin Rasulillah ila Bakr bin Wa'il, aslimu taslamu' (From Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), to Bakr bin Wa'il: Accept Islam and you will be safe). They (the people of the tribe) said: We found no one to read this letter except a man of the tribe of Banu Dubay'ah; so for this reason those people came to be called 'Banu al-Katib' (the sons of the scribe)." Imam al-Bazzar said: This report is known only through this chain, while Imam Ibn Hibban graded this hadith sahih (authentic).
