Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 1978 — Kindness to animals

It is narrated from Yahya bin Jabir (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by some people who had made a camel kneel and had (already) loaded two large sacks (ghiraratayn) onto it, then they put another sack on top of them. The camel did not have the strength to get up (under the load), so Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) removed that (extra) sack from it, threw it down, and then raised the camel up.
Then Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) said (to those people): "If Allah Almighty forgives you for the things you do to these voiceless animals, then know that He has forgiven you very great sins. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Indeed Allah Almighty enjoins you to show goodwill and kindness to these voiceless animals: (on a journey) set them down at their proper halting places (give them rest), and if it is a time of drought, look after them while preserving the last of their strength.'"
(Imam Ahmad also narrated it through another chain, from Abu Idris al-Khawlani from Abu al-Darda', as a marfu' report, that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If what (harshness) you do to animals were forgiven, many of your sins would be forgiven.")
