Imam Abu Ya'la narrates that Sayyiduna Jarir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) related: Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched a military detachment, he would say: 'Bismillah, wa fi sabilillah, wa ala millati Rasulillah (peace and blessings be upon him)' (Set out with the name of Allah, in the path of Allah, and upon the religion and way of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)), and then he would command: "Do not embezzle from the spoils of war, do not act treacherously, do not mutilate the slain (that is, do not disfigure them by cutting off noses, ears and the like), and never kill children."
