Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 1785 — Vows

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Malik that the sister of Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) vowed that she would perform Hajj walking on foot with her hair loose (her head uncovered). So Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Command her to put on her head-covering (to cover her head), to ride, and to fast three days."
The imams of hadith and the jurists derive from this that a vow which involves violating a ruling of the Shari'ah or excessive hardship need not be fulfilled; rather, an expiation (such as fasting or charity) is to be given in its place, because Allah Almighty has no need of putting His servant to needless hardship.
