It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: "In the Days of Ignorance the period of ila' (an oath to abstain from marital relations with one's wife) used to be one year, two years or even more. Then Allah Almighty fixed a limit of four months for it; so whoever's ila' is for less than four months, it is not ila' (with its legal ruling)."
Imam Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) said: If the husband makes ila' from his wife while she is still in her parents' home and has not yet been sent to her husband's home, it will not be considered ila'.
