قَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْقُرَشِيُّ ، نَبَا أَبُو الْمَلِيحِ ، عَنْ مَيْمُونِ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ قَالَ : خَطَبَ مُعَاوِيَةُ أُمَّ الدَّرْدَاءِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا ، فَأَبَتْ أَنْ تَتَزَوَّجَهُ . قَالَتْ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الدَّرْدَاءِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " الْمَرْأَةُ لِآخِرِ أَزْوَاجِهَا " ، وَلَسْتُ أُرِيدُ بِأَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ بَدَلًا .
Maymun bin Mihran relates that Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a proposal of marriage to Sayyidah Umm al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with her), but she refused to marry him and said: I heard Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A woman will belong (in Paradise) to the last of her husbands," and I do not wish to take anyone else as my life partner in place of Abu al-Darda'.
