قَالَ الْحَارِثُ : حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ ، نَبَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ قَالَ : إِنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ : إِنَّ لِي ابْنَةً وَأَدْتُهَا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ، وَإِنِّي اسْتَخْرَجْتُهَا فَأَسْلَمَتْ فَأَصَابَتْ حَدًّا ، فَعَمَدَتْ إِلَى الشَّفْرَةِ فَذَبَحَتْ نَفْسَهَا ، فَأَدْرَكْتُهَا وَقَدْ قَطَعَتْ بَعْضَ أَوْدَاجِهَا ، فَدَاوَيْتُهَا فَبَرَأَتْ ، ثُمَّ إِنَّهَا نَسَكَتْ ، فَأَقْبَلَتْ عَلَى الْقُرْآنِ . وَإِنَّهَا تُخْطَبُ إِلَيَّ ، فَتَمْنَعُنِي مِنْ شَأْنِهَا الَّذِي كَانَ .
فَقَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : " تَعْمِدُ إِلَى سَتْرٍ سَتَرَهُ اللهُ تَعَالَى فَتَكْشِفُهُ ؟ لَئِنْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ ذَكَرْتَ مِنْ شَأْنِهَا شَيْئًا لَأَجْعَلَنَّكَ نَكَالًا لِأَهْلِ الْأَمْصَارِ ، بَلْ أَنْكِحْهَا نِكَاحَ الْعَفِيفَةِ الْمُسْلِمَةِ ".
فَقَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : " تَعْمِدُ إِلَى سَتْرٍ سَتَرَهُ اللهُ تَعَالَى فَتَكْشِفُهُ ؟ لَئِنْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ ذَكَرْتَ مِنْ شَأْنِهَا شَيْئًا لَأَجْعَلَنَّكَ نَكَالًا لِأَهْلِ الْأَمْصَارِ ، بَلْ أَنْكِحْهَا نِكَاحَ الْعَفِيفَةِ الْمُسْلِمَةِ ".
It is narrated from Imam al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man came to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: I have a daughter whom I buried alive in the Days of Ignorance; then I took her out (of the grave) alive. She accepted Islam, and then she committed an offence for which a legal punishment (hadd) became due. She (out of intense remorse) took a blade and tried to slaughter herself; I found her when she had already cut part of her jugular vein. I treated her and she recovered. Then she took the path of repentance and turning back to Allah, and devoted herself entirely to the Noble Qur'an. Now she is receiving marriage proposals, but her past leaves me in hesitation (about disclosing the facts).
On hearing this, Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do you want to expose a covering with which Allah Almighty has concealed (her)? Remember, if news reaches me that you have mentioned anything of her past to anyone, I will make you an example for the people of all the cities. Rather, marry her off as a chaste and modest Muslim woman."
